Has Anyone Successfully Imported Woodworking Tools from Abroad?

I'm considering upgrading some of my woodworking hand tools, like chisels, clamps, and maybe even a mini lathe. I found some sellers overseas, especially on Alibaba, offering full sets at prices much lower than I usually see locally. Some of the tools appear quite similar to the branded ones available here, and a seller even shared a short video showcasing their spindle sanders and sharpening stones, which looked decent enough. However, I'm hesitant about potential issues like shipping delays, customs, and especially the quality of the steel. I really don't want to end up with a low-quality set that breaks after a couple of uses. If anyone has experience importing tools like these, I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences. I'm really trying to avoid wasting money on something that could end up being useless.

I get where you're coming from, but just remember: Alibaba can have some decent items, but that’s often not the case. Even if a seller shows you a cool video, they probably just filmed the best version of that tool. What you actually get might be made from inferior materials. I wouldn’t trust bladed tools or anything that takes a hit from there; you would just end up disappointed.

Honestly, it might be better for you to just skip this plan. Consider investing time in finding vintage tools that are known for their quality or researching reputable modern brands. Otherwise, you risk buying cheap junk and then eventually having to spend more to get good stuff anyway.

One important tip: whatever you decide, make sure you have free returns or use a credit card that offers return protection. That's going to be key if things don't work out.
