Looking for Resources on Designing a Large Garden (2.5 Acres)

Hey everyone! I'm diving into a long-term project where I'll be designing a 2.5-acre garden. This summer and fall, I'm focused on clearing out sumac and figuring out the lay of the land, including which native trees and plants to keep. I'm on the hunt for any books, blogs, speakers, or online courses that can help me plan and design this space effectively. Any suggestions or resources you'd recommend?

I feel your pain! Finding resources for large-scale garden design is tricky. I have 5 acres myself, and I’ve realized that what works for smaller gardens doesn't always apply. My tip? Start by planning out the key structures and paths first. Pay attention to the sun, shade, and water in different areas, and think about how you want to frame your views. Walking the property and noting what you want where is vital!

Definitely! The layout makes a big difference. Getting those big landmarks down first can set the tone for everything else.

Great question! It’s a bit like asking for a one-size-fits-all guide—there are so many styles to consider! Depending on your taste, you could check out YouTube for tours of larger gardens. If you lean towards English gardens, library books can help you connect with design principles. For practical tips, look for landscape architect lectures on YouTube. Generally, start with a map of how you want the different areas, and let function guide the form!

Awesome, thanks for the help! I’ll definitely look into some of those resources.

Since your vision isn't entirely clear yet, I'd recommend sketching out your plans on paper. Begin with clearing the land and assessing light conditions. Then, think about what elements you want in the space: fruit trees, a potager garden, or a cozy greenhouse. Consider walkways, water features, and how all these can work together as focal points. Planning now will make a huge difference later!
