I'm having a tough time with Tapcons breaking when I try to install a hose reel on brick. I've successfully used Tapcons in cinder blocks, but when I drill into brick, both times the Tapcon broke in half as I was driving it into the pilot hole. I used a hammer drill in hammer mode to create a 5/32" hole with a masonry bit, and followed the instructions for depth. However, when I used a driver to insert a 3/16 inch Tapcon, it broke off completely about 3/4 of the way in. I've read that I should be using anchors, but I thought Tapcons were meant to work without them?

If you're still having issues, try drilling a 3/16" hole and insert pieces of nylon trimmer string. It can help create a better grip in the mortar. But really, focus on getting the dust out and check your drilling depth. An impact driver can also give you better control!
You need to clear the hole of any dust before inserting the Tapcon. I’ve seen it happen before where the fine dust clogs the hole and that’s what makes the Tapcon snap. Also, ensure that you drill a bit deeper than you might think you need.
Have you cleaned out the hole after drilling? Tapcons are actually designed to work without anchors, but dust can really mess things up. Make sure to blow out the dust from the hole before you insert the screw; that could be causing your breakage.
