Why is my Arbortech ball gouge bouncing around?

Hey everyone, I'm really frustrated with my Arbortech ball gouge. I've had it for a bit now, and no matter how I try to use it, it keeps jumping around unpredictably. I bought it because I've seen people achieve these smooth shapes like spoons and bowls, but for me, it feels like a waste of money. I can't get even one smooth cut no matter which angle or direction I try. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Have you considered using the side handle on your grinder? It really helps stabilize the tool and control the direction of the cut. Also, give it a shot on softer or green wood, you might find it more manageable there. By the way, if you’re using an older grinder, it might also have a spindle issue that could cause the bouncing.

It sounds like you might be pushing too hard with the gouge. These tools should just lightly touch the wood, taking off thin layers rather than forcing through. Maybe try a lighter touch and see if that helps!

What type of wood are you working with? Dry wood can sometimes make it tougher to control, but I've found that repositioning often helps, especially when you brace your arm. If you're on green wood, it usually behaves a lot better for me.
