Has Anyone Tried Gardening Only to Decide It’s Not For Them?

I've always loved the idea of gardens, especially flowers, but this year marks my first time living in a house with a backyard. I've learned that gardening is not really my thing. For starters, the bugs are a huge problem—every time I step outside, it's like battling with cobwebs, spiders, midges, and flies. I even have aphids on my flowers! I've invested a lot of time in visiting nurseries, researching, digging, and planting, but I hardly have time for my usual outdoor activities like hiking and camping anymore.

After a recent two-week trip, I returned home to find my backyard in disarray, which added to my frustration. I've automated some watering with sprinklers and irrigation kits, but I still have a few pots that need hand watering, and unfortunately, some of those plants have died from neglect.

I'm thinking it might be time to rethink my backyard strategy to fit my lifestyle better. Currently, it's mostly mulch with a couple of roses and a few shrubs along the border. I don't want to revert to grass since we've put a lot of effort into getting rid of it. I'm considering paving it eventually, but funds are tight. I'm even contemplating growing mint since it might help with the bug situation. Any suggestions on how I can make my backyard work for me?

Totally get where you're coming from! I had my fair share of gardening enthusiasm only to feel overwhelmed. One thing that worked for me was going native! Native plants adapt better and require less maintenance, so you can actually enjoy your space without feeling like it's a chore. Plus, it supports local pollinators. Have you thought about creating a wildflower meadow? It's easier than it sounds! Check out the r/nativeplantgardening community for a ton of good tips.

Thanks for the suggestion! I do have a few native plants, but maybe not enough. I'll definitely look into expanding that!

If you're looking for low-maintenance options, you might want to consider some stone pavers and a few container plants! It allows you to enjoy a bit of greenery without all the work of traditional gardening. Honestly, a paved area with some flowers and maybe a water feature can look fantastic without the hassle. Plus, it keeps things tidy and minimizes bugs, which seems to be a big concern for you.

Hey! I used to feel the same way until I cut down on the number of plants I was caring for. I was trying to do way too much. Now, I focus on a few key plants I love and keep them in pots. It looks great and makes watering less of a hassle since I can set them up in a way that’s manageable. Also, I recommend avoiding the weed barrier fabrics—they just complicate things more. Less is definitely more when it comes to gardening enjoyment!

I can relate to that! I found that focusing on fewer plants really made gardening more fun. I also started keeping chickens—they help with the bugs and provide fertilizer, which has been a big help!
