How Can I Preserve My Late Mother-in-Law’s Oil Cross Markings When Moving?

Hey everyone! My mother-in-law, who sadly passed away a couple of years back, was really religious and had some superstitions. Shortly after her passing, we noticed she made oil crosses on our door with her fingers. Now that we've bought a new house, I'm wondering how I can remove these oil marks from our current home and take them with us. I had this idea of using tape to pull up the markings and sticking them on the door frame of our new place. Does anyone have any better suggestions or methods for preserving these meaningful marks? Thanks in advance!

Honestly, I think the simplest route is to just get a new front door. It sounds like your mother-in-law had a beautiful story with those marks. If you can, maybe find a door that is similar or matches closely. That way, you can keep the sentiment without rushing into anything. Plus, you could always have a replica made if you wanted!

I'd love to, but the landlord situation makes that hard. We're moving on a tight schedule.

Another option could be to frame a photo of the crosses or maybe even have a lovely cross made that includes her name. That way you have something meaningful that lasts longer than the oil on the door.

That's a beautiful idea! A framed cross would be a nice tribute to her.

How about trying those oil blotting sheets you can find for makeup? Press one carefully over the oil crosses to see if you can lift some of that oil. Just make sure to test it out first so it doesn’t spread out! These sheets can be fragile, so keep an eye on them.

You can't really transfer those prints with tape, unfortunately. They’re pretty permanent. But if you're just looking for the shape, maybe take a detailed photo of it? You could then use that picture to create a design on tape or something similar for your new door.

That's a good thought! Just capturing the pattern would mean a lot to us, so using a photo for a design could work well.
