DIY Hacks for Awkward Kitchen Cabinets?

I'm currently house hunting and found a place we adore, but it needs some cosmetic upgrades. One specific issue has me puzzled: the lower kitchen cabinets have an unusual trapezoidal shape where the sides meet the floor, making them look quite odd next to the standard rectangular countertops. I can't seem to find the right term for this weird design choice when searching online, as everything seems to lead to corner or lazy Susan cabinets. Is there any way to make these cabinets appear more traditionally squared without a full replacement?

I think those cabinets might just be a relic of mid-century modern design, especially if they’re from the 60s like mine. For lower cabinets, though, I totally agree that they've got to go! Best bet may be to stick with them for now and plan on replacing them when you've got the funds.

Honestly, it's tough to imagine a reliable way to make those cabinets look 'square' without basically tearing them down and starting over. If you're considering a redo, it might just be easier to get new cabinets instead of trying to fix what's there.

You could technically make adjustments, but it's probably more complicated than it's worth. You'll likely end up having to rebuild most of the cabinets. If budget is tight, I suggest looking at ready-to-assemble cabinets. Just remember, not all RTA options are created equal—some are great, and others not so much.

I feel you! It's confusing why those cabinets were designed that way in the first place. It sounds like you have a unique layout, especially with your dishwasher sticking out. If they're functional, it might be worth leaving them until you can afford a proper renovation.
