Mystery Frog in My Garden – Where Did It Come From?

I've been living in my new place for 9 months, and I'm gradually filling my garden with plants and bird feeders. I'm thrilled to have regular visits from goldfinches, greenfinches, robins, and even a family of blackbirds! However, this morning, while I was sorting through some soil bags, a large frog suddenly jumped out! It's surprising since I live off a main road, right next to a footpath, and there's no water source nearby, just some saucers of water I set out for the birds. I'm puzzled—where could this frog have been all this time? Any ideas would be appreciated!

Just a thought—could it be a toad? Toads are pretty adaptable, and if it appeared dry, it may likely be one of those. They don't necessarily need ponds nearby like frogs do.

I checked, and it seems like frogs jump while toads don't. I'll try uploading a pic to see if you can help identify it!

Frogs are great at hiding! They can often thrive in damp, shaded areas where they have access to food. Even if it seems dry right now, they might have made a cozy spot among your soil bags. It sounds like you've created a nice habitat for the wildlife!

But it's been so dry here for months! Can frogs actually live underground? Is that a silly question?

They can really surprise you! One of my frogs lived under my recycling bin for years. That's cool you propped open a terracotta pot for it. They're beneficial for gardens despite giving you a jump scare sometimes!

I squealed when it jumped! Thought I was going to faint alone in the garden! ? I guess it’s handy having a frog around to deal with spiders too!
