What’s the Average Size of Homegrown Peppers?

I absolutely love seeing all the produce everyone is sharing! Coming from a supermarket background, I have these expectations of how big my veggies should be, which often leads to disappointment when my own homegrown produce turns out to be on the smaller side. I wanted to open up a discussion about what the average sizes of homegrown produce like peppers typically are. For example, my banana peppers are only about 3 inches long and my jalapeños are roughly the same size, even though they're supposed to reach 4-4.5 inches. I'd also love to see some pictures of your peppers!

To achieve that grocery store size, peppers need a lot of nutrients, especially nitrogen and potassium, along with consistent watering. I’ve noticed a big difference in size between in-ground and potted peppers. With my climate, the in-ground ones always outgrow the potted ones unless I invest in super-sized pots! Plus, quality seeds really matter. It's often worth spending a bit more on good hybrids versus cheap options to see better results.

If you're in a hot area, wrapping your pots can help keep the soil cool. Also, let the first few flowers drop off to encourage better fruit size later. And mulch well to retain moisture!

Seed packets often list ideal fruit sizes, but they usually mean under perfect growing conditions. Most of us are growing plants that aren't naturally suited to our areas, so they might need a little extra care to thrive. Don't fret too much about the size, as this can be pretty common!

I was surprised when I grew poblanos for the first time. The store ones are typically around 7 inches, while mine only grew to about 3-4 inches. Right now, I’m trying a variety called ‘Big Boss Man’ which should bring me some 5-inch ones. It’s interesting to see how they differ!

Same here! My poblanos are about 4 inches long too. They look great but are definitely not as big as what I see in stores. I’m making Rajas Poblanas tonight, so my smaller ones should still work out well!
