Should I Remove Paint from My Basement Walls?

Hey folks! My wife and I purchased an older home a couple of years ago, and I've been looking into the basement walls. The previous owner painted them, but I noticed some areas where the paint is chipping. I found some mold killer spray left behind, so I'm assuming they had some mold issues due to moisture. After we bought the house, I got a professional to apply lead block encapsulating paint, and luckily, the walls tested negative for lead. Although they look great now, I recently came across a post suggesting that painting basement walls might not be a good idea since they need to 'breathe.' Given the thickness of the paint, I'm starting to wonder if I should have it removed. What do you think?

The main concern with painting basement walls is moisture. If moisture gets trapped behind a paint layer, it could lead to mold and damage over time. If you're able to manage moisture from outside and keep it out of the concrete, it's generally okay to paint. Just make sure to keep an eye on it, though!

This is important! You can still paint, but always opt for breathable, masonry paints. If moisture is passing through the foundation, that paint won’t hold up for long.

My walls look fine for now, but I'm considering doing an air quality test for mold. Should I address the paint now, or just keep monitoring?

Honestly, you might not need to panic just yet. If everything looks good to your eye and you've handled the lead situation, maybe just keep monitoring for mold before deciding to strip the paint. An air quality test sounds like a smart move!
