What’s the Best Way to Stay Comfortable While Gardening in the Heat?

I've found myself gardening in some pretty intense heat and humidity lately, and the bugs are relentless. I typically wear long pants and long sleeves to fend off the insects, but then I get overheated and can only last about 30-40 minutes. I was wondering if others face this issue too. What do you wear to stay cool and comfortable while gardening?

Honestly, I don’t wear anything special when gardening. I often just throw on some shorts and a t-shirt on weekends. I know I’ll get bitten by bugs anyway, so my advice is to create a low-maintenance garden. Maybe try groundcover to reduce weeds or think about xeriscaping to cut down on work.

I was really battling mosquitoes until I tried this product called Encompass oil that I saw on social media. It’s a versatile blend that doubles as a bug repellent, and I’m honestly thrilled with it! I’ve been using it during a big yard project while wearing shorts and a tank top, and I've only gotten two bites in two weeks!

My go-to is a long sleeve fishing shirt from Cabela’s with UV protection, plus a wide-brimmed gardening hat to keep the sun off my face.

When it comes to gardening pants, I really like my Duluth overalls because they’re sturdy yet comfortable. On top, I go for a moisture-wicking long sleeve running shirt that's breathable. It keeps me protected from bugs without making me feel overheated.

I prefer light-colored, breathable shirts myself. But the best trick I’ve found is to spray myself down with cold water from the hose—it really helps with the heat!

I swear by dry-fit everything! Columbia has some affordable long sleeve fishing shirts that are super breathable. They really help keep me cool, plus the moisture-wicking feature does wonders in hot conditions.

Totally agree on Columbia! Their long sleeve moisture-wicking shirts often have UPF 50, so I don’t have to slather on sunscreen as much.
