Do I Need to Refill Mortar After Removing an Exterior Light?

I'm removing an exterior light fixture from my brick house, and I've noticed that it was installed in what I'm pretty sure is mortar—the gray stuff that holds the bricks together. The holes left behind are about 2 inches deep. Do I need to fill in these holes, or can they be left as they are?

Honestly, using silicone sealant could be a way better and cheaper option for those holes than mixing up mortar. It'll save you a lot of hassle! If you want it to look more seamless, then go for mortar, but silicone gets the job done easily if you're not super picky about the finish.

I totally get your situation! I'm in the same boat with a big hole in my mortar and a few screw holes left in the bricks. I’m planning to fill both, since it can look pretty rough if you leave them as is. Just curious to see what others recommend too!

What size are we talking for those holes? You mean like standard screw holes, or more like the size of a recessed electrical box?

Just standard screw holes, but they’re a bit bigger since there are anchors in there. Nothing too wild though!
