I'm planning to build a 14x14 wooden pergola/shed using six 4x4 posts. I'm new to this and working with a limited budget. The heights are set with the first post at 0 feet, the second at 8 feet, and the third at 14 feet, with the high side being 8 feet above ground and the low side at 6 feet. I'm going to notch the 4x4s to support a 2x8x14 beam. I'm looking for advice on what beams to choose while keeping costs down. Would 2x8x16 beams on the sides and 2x8x14 for the middle posts work, and should I use rafters from the side beams to the middle beams?

I would recommend avoiding 4x4 posts if you can. It's better to go for at least 6x6, preferably even 8x8, especially without a middle support. While 4x4s can hold the load, they'll look pretty flimsy for a structure like this.

I already set some 4x4 posts, and I'm sticking with them since I'm on a tight budget. I just need it to be sturdy enough, and I don't care too much about appearances.
