Is it Possible to Grow Wisteria on a Pot-Integrated Trellis?

I'm a new gardener and I think wisteria is such a stunning plant! I want to grow one in a pot at the front of my house, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea. I'm considering using a large pot and attaching a trellis to it, allowing the wisteria to climb. Are there any potential problems with this setup? When wisteria grows, it can reach heights of up to 10 meters, so would it be possible for me to keep adding trellises as it grows? I have some woodwork skills and I'm thinking of creating a question-mark shape around a window at the front of my house. Oh, and I'm in Scotland, planning to go with a grafted Chinese wisteria. Does that change anything?

My neighbors have a wisteria in a big pot, and it's thriving! Just remember to water it regularly, especially during hot weather, and to feed it as needed. Also, be prepared for the trellis to get twisted up as it grows, so make sure you use a solid, strong one!

For sure, you can grow in a pot but pick a compact variety like Amethyst Falls. Regular pruning is necessary with these plants since they can grow pretty fast and take over if not kept in check. Just be ready to trim it often!

You can definitely grow wisteria in a pot, but just keep in mind that the trellis needs to be securely anchored since wisteria can get quite large and act like a sail in the wind. So, something sturdy is important!

Good point! Maybe I could use some wooden spacers to stabilize it against the house.

Just a heads up—wisteria, especially the vigorous varieties, can grow aggressively. Your pot needs to be sturdy, and the trellis will need to be heavy-duty too, as these plants can tend to crush weaker supports over time. But don’t worry if it does get out of hand; you can always cut it back and try again!

Yeah, wisteria tends to be quite aggressive for smaller trellises. You might want to consider a more compact variety like Wisteria Amethyst, which could be a better fit for your space. It's typically more manageable than the larger types.
