Best Way to Hang a 22lb Mirror on Drywall?

I'm looking for advice on how to hang a mirror that weighs around 22 pounds. The instructions from the manufacturer included a screw and a plastic anchor that's about 1.25 inches long for use in drywall. I'm a bit concerned if this will be strong enough since the last time I used one of those claw push-in hooks and it eventually fell. Is there a better type of anchor I should consider for the drywall, or do you think the plastic anchor will do the job? Just a heads up, there's only one hook on the back of the mirror for mounting.

Honestly, I’d recommend using a stud finder and anchoring it directly into a stud. I’ve had a lot of issues with drywall anchors in the past, so I personally don’t trust them.

I totally agree with you; plastic anchors don’t inspire confidence. If you really can’t find a stud, check out Fliptoggle anchors. We used those at Best Buy for TV mounts, and they hold up super well!

Sadly, the location my wife wants the mirror doesn’t have a stud available. But thanks for the tip!

I’ve successfully mounted a heavy mirror using high-quality anchors when studs weren’t available. It’s a bit pricier, but worth it for anchors rated for higher weights. I've used some that can support 50 lbs. They're only a few bucks at the hardware store. Just remember, they leave a bigger hole if removed, but it’s all good if you get quality. The "EZ" brand is a solid choice!

Usually, wires run alongside the studs, but it's always good to be cautious. Just try to keep the anchor placement away from horizontal lines and use a stud finder if possible.

Awesome! I was looking at those. I'm definitely leaning towards the 50lb anchors; they seem solid. Quick question, is there a risk of hitting electrical wires if my anchor is close to a stud? Thanks!

You’ve got plenty of options at Home Depot. Just pick whichever anchor looks easiest to use. Most anchors they stock should handle 22 lbs just fine, but make sure to check the weight ratings on them.

Yeah, you might find a stronger one at Home Depot compared to the basic plastic anchors.
