How Can I Reduce Heat in My Living Room with Large Windows?

I have a west-facing living room with four large windows that make it hard to keep the room cool, especially during the afternoon sun. The windows were recently replaced, so I'm considering options like installing exterior awnings or solar shades to block the heat. However, I'm thinking about doing a quick and cheap test before making a big investment. Would it be completely crazy to cover the outside of the windows with foil to see if it helps reduce the interior temperature? I know it's not the most eco-friendly idea, but it could save me a lot of money in the long run. I'm also open to other suggestions!

You might want to look into interior shades first. I recommend the Persilux brand on Amazon; they’re usually under $100 and I’ve found them really effective. I have them on a large picture window, and I've noticed a big difference in temperature.

Thanks for the brand tip! I’ve heard interior shades do help, but I thought exterior ones would be more effective overall.
