Is Anyone Actually Saving Money Gardening?

I've been gardening for a few years now and always tell myself I'm saving money, but I'm honestly not sure if I am. For instance, I'll spend around $40 on seeds and soil amendments, and then harvest a lot of tomatoes and think, "This must be saving me money!" But I never really compare that to what I would spend if I bought them at the store. Do you keep track of your gardening expenses vs. your harvest? I started a spreadsheet this year, but it's already looking messy. I'm curious if anyone else has found a good way to track this or if we all just garden for the love of it without worrying about money.

I'm pretty sure I'm down a couple hundred dollars this year alone, and that's just on materials. If I counted all the water costs too, I'd be in even deeper. I reckon if you really want to save, you have to plant a lot more, but honestly, I'm just doing it for the fun now. Good luck to you, OP!

Wow, I can relate! I accidentally left my sprinkler on for like 14 hours the other day... yikes!

For real! I installed a drip system this year and it's been a lifesaver!

Honestly, I don't even try to track it. Gardening is therapeutic for me. Sure, I grow food, but I just love being outdoors. Plus, that fresh produce? It can't compare to store-bought!

Preach! The joy of growing and tending to my plants outweighs any savings I could calculate.

Exactly! It’s about spending time in the garden and enjoying the fruits (literally) of my labor!

Honestly, I think we all know we're probably in the negative when it comes to costs. ? I mean, I grow certain varieties that you can't even find in stores, which makes them taste way better. Plus, nothing beats fresh veggies from the garden for dinner! Just grab your harvest and within an hour, you're eating! It's more about the experience for me than the savings.

Absolutely! That fresh taste can't be beat, and I love that I can enjoy it right from my yard.

Exactly! That's why I keep gardening even if it seems like a money pit.
