What’s the Best Order for Replacing Doors, Trim, and Baseboards?

I'm updating the look of my house after living here for 12 years. The current setup is pretty basic with 6-panel doors, low baseboards, and no window trim. I've already repainted the ceilings and walls, and I'm excited to start the finishing touches with doors, windows, and baseboards. Here's my proposed order of operations for the project:

1. Replace the doors
2. Install new door trim
3. Remove the old baseboards and install new ones, so everything at floor level is set.
4. Frame the windows
5. Finish off with crown molding

Does anyone have suggestions or a different order that works better?

Looks like your plan is solid! Just remember to consider your flooring plans too. If you're thinking of changing them, it might be smart to postpone the baseboards and door casings for now until after the floors are done.

Actually, I’d suggest doing the door trim before the baseboards. The baseboards usually meet the door trim unless you use blocks. Plus, when you’re picking trim, make sure the door trim is thicker than the baseboards for a more polished look!

That makes a lot of sense! Thanks for the tip!

I wouldn't go with your current plan. I replaced my baseboards first when I did new floors but later wanted to change out the door and window casings. Now I have to trim the baseboards again to fit the new casing! Lesson learned: it’s better to do doors first, then the trim, and finally the baseboards to avoid all this hassle. Trust me, it’s a pain to go back!

Your approach could work, but be cautious if you're switching to thicker casings compared to what you have now. If the new door trim is larger, you'll likely need to adjust the baseboards to fit. I'd recommend doing all the demo at once, then tackle the doors first, and finally trim everything out as you go. This way, you won't have to jump between your demo tools and trim tools.
