What Houseplants Should I Consider for My Apartment and Back Porch?

I'm looking to add some houseplants to my apartment for the first time and could use some friendly advice! For the inside, I often leave my place for days at a time with the blinds closed (for privacy), so I'm wondering if there are any plants that can thrive in lower light conditions. I keep my apartment around 71-73 degrees Fahrenheit. For my back porch, the weather is hot and humid most of the year, with heavy rain during the season. There's an overhang, but it still gets pretty intense sunlight at times. What plants would work best for these conditions?

Zz plants and snake plants are fantastic choices! They're super tolerant of neglect and can handle low light much better than most. Just keep in mind that every plant still needs some light to thrive. If it’s an option for you, think about using grow lights since they can really help small desk plants flourish in dim conditions.

Golden pothos is your best friend if you're looking for something resilient! They can survive a few days in low light, and I’ve found them to thrive as long as they can dry out a bit between waterings—so they won't mind if you’re not home for a couple of days. Just make sure they get some good light now and then, and you should be all set!

Welcome to the plant parent club! Getting the hang of plant care basics is key: think light, water, and soil. For your indoors, remember that even 'low light' spots might not be enough for some plants. If you can get a grow light, it'll really help any plant thrive where sunlight is scarce. For your back porch, it’s a bit trickier since weather conditions can change, but you'll have plenty of options once you figure out your plant hardiness zone! This way, you can choose plants that survive based on your local climate.

Just a side note: when I struggled with privacy in my last apartment, I used this iridescent window film that filtered in great light while keeping things cozy. Might be something to consider!

That's a neat idea with the window film! I actually used a similar thing and it really helped my plants get the light they needed while still giving me privacy. Win-win!

Totally, it brightens up the space without sacrificing your privacy, which is great for plants too!

I hear you on the 'easy care' plant idea—everyone has different definitions! For starters, pothos, rubber plants, and zz plants are hard to kill and pretty forgiving if you forget to water them once in a while. But steer clear of succulents unless you're really disciplined about watering, as they hate being overwatered. For your porch, why not try monstera? They love bright sunlight and humidity, just make sure they have some shelter during really heavy rain!
