I'm trying to figure out which home improvement store is the best option among the big three near me: Ace Hardware, Home Depot, and Lowe's. Can someone break down what each store does best and how they differ from one another?

Ace Hardware is often independently owned, which is why I personally prefer shopping there when I can. They might be pricier than the big box stores, but you get more personalized service. If I had to pick between Lowe's and Home Depot, I’d go with Lowe's for lumber since they generally have better availability.
It really depends on what you're looking for. Ace Hardware is great for small, neighborhood needs but might have higher prices. For more extensive projects, I think Lowe's is better for the average DIYer. Home Depot is also in the mix, but I find their lumber quality isn’t the best. That said, sometimes you might find very specific items only at Lowe's, like certain types of insulation or specialized tools.
Honestly, the best way to decide is just to visit each store and check them out yourself. Everyone has different needs, and walking around will give you a good feel for what they offer.

Yeah, I agree! I try to avoid Home Depot for lumber because I've had issues with quality, and when I really need something specific, I often head to Menards instead for better wood selection.
