I'm starting my first engraving project and would love some advice on the best bits to use. I have a Dremel-style tool (Craftsman brand), and I also own a trim router and a plunge router. I think the Dremel is ideal for carving script letters and numbers, but I'm unsure which specific bit would suit my needs. Can anyone recommend the best starting options for engraving? Thanks in advance!

For wood, I recommend using a fluted spiral downcut bit; they're perfect for engraving. If you're working with plastic, then end mill bits are your best bet. You can find kits that offer different widths. Also, make sure to use a fixed or plunge base attachment with your Dremel, as freehand engravings can be tricky. This equipment makes a huge difference!

It really depends on the type of wood you're working with and the direction of the grain. For example, if you're engraving pine against the grain, oak with the grain, or using pallet wood, the results will vary. The depth of your engraving also plays a huge role in choosing the right bit. Just think of it like asking which saw to use for different types of cuts!
Got it! So just to clarify, would a 2 mm depth work well for those types of wood?

Is this what you're talking about? Check out this kit: https://preview.redd.it/iaeffxiop3df1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2cb950202b160b6be4d86d84e4de1a9d71e75f6f
