Need Help Clearing Poison Ivy and Sumac from My Property!

I've been struggling with poison ivy and sumac on my property, and it's turning into a real nightmare. I've had severe rashes that sent me to urgent care twice this summer. A section of my land is completely overgrown with brush, weeds, and these toxic plants, making it hard to access my shed, which fortunately has electric running to it. I have been very careful, wearing protective clothing, using Tec Nu after being outside, and I want to avoid chemicals to protect local wildlife and plants that I've worked hard to cultivate in my certified wildlife habitat. But with this mess continuing to spread, I'm at my wit's end. I'm in Western Massachusetts, and I'm looking for advice on how to tackle this issue. Should I just spray it all down and deal with the aftermath, or are there safer options? I need to reclaim this area, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Honestly, I feel you! Just spray it and get it over with. There's a fine line between trying to stay chemical-free and just making your life miserable. It might take years for the urushiol oil to disappear from the dead plants, but it'll be worth it to finally be done with the constant rashes and struggles. Sometimes you gotta prioritize your own well-being over everything else!

Amen to that! Sometimes you just have to put your health first.

Exactly! I just need to find the right product that won't harm all my good plants.

I feel your pain, trust me! I'm in a similar situation and it's exhausting. I had a meltdown last week just dealing with my own poison ivy patches. I wish we could just team up and get some goats or something, haha! Good luck to you, I hope you find a solution soon.

I love the idea of goats, but no luck finding them around here!

Same here! That would make our lives so much easier.

I totally get what you're going through. Besides wearing protective gear, make sure to wash your clothes right after and maybe consider an outdoor shower if you have one! That's what I did, just to ensure I don't accidentally spread anything. Persistent issues like this can be draining, but definitely be cautious about any tools too—they can carry the oils and give you a rash again!

Great tips! I’ll definitely keep up with washing everything carefully.

An outdoor shower sounds like a perfect solution!
