Hey everyone! I've recently gotten my hands on a Denon LA-3100 LaserDisc player, but it came without the remote (Denon RC517). While I love the player, it's a bit of a hassle to get up and manually change things. I thought it would be a fun challenge to build my own remote. I know some folks have used Arduinos for similar projects, but I have very little experience with DIY electronics. Since the original remote is super rare to find, I was wondering if I could buy a universal remote to get some codes and then capture them for my project? Or am I just overthinking this? Thanks for any tips!

Buying a universal remote and capturing the codes is hit or miss. Only some buttons might work if it even recognizes your player, and extracting codes directly from your LaserDisc player would require disassembling it and a ton of tech know-how. My recommendation is to first try out a programmable universal remote. If that doesn't pan out, find someone who has the original remote and see if they'll program your universal remote with it. Just be cautious, as you'd have to trust them not to keep your remote!

Yeah, I had a similar situation when I bought an old player. I ended up finding someone who helped me out with programming, but it did take some trust on my part!
