I've got a front door that needs some TLC, and I want to bring it back to its former glory without slapping on any paint. Check out the picture here: [https://i.imgur.com/ALFfRx3.jpeg](https://i.imgur.com/ALFfRx3.jpeg). I'm mainly concerned about the bottom part that looks different from the rest. I'm assuming I don't have any stain or finish leftover from the previous owner.
1. What should I do to fix it? What specific products like stains, oils, or polyurethanes should I use, and why?
2. Should I just tackle the worn areas, or do I need to refinish the whole door?

I’ve had good luck with Old English wood oils for projects like this. They really nourish the wood and can bring back some of its original color and shine. You might need to apply it a few times if the wood is super dry, but it’s a solid choice for maintenance without changing the door’s look too much.
Your door looks worn but also somewhat oxidized. That means just oiling it won’t cut it. I’d recommend sanding the entire door down to get rid of the gray oxidation. It’s a manual process, especially with the detailing, but you can use a random orbital sander on the flat parts. Expect to spend a good day on both sides. After sanding, go for a stain and then a couple of coats of outdoor-rated polyurethane—something designed for boats is ideal. Finish off with some paste wax for that polished look.

Honestly, if it’s your first time sanding a door, you might be underestimating the time it takes. Prepare to invest a bit more than a full day on it!
