I'm buying a home (yay!) and we've got a few projects on our list. One of them is relocating the thermostat for the AC, which is currently just hanging down from a wire in the basement near the HVAC unit. We'd like to move it to the dining room upstairs. There's already a Google Nest sensor in the dining room, but I'm not sure if that means there's existing wiring for the thermostat. Our inspector couldn't confirm.
Should I hire an electrician or an HVAC professional for this job? Any recommendations?

You could do this yourself if you're up for it! Grab some low voltage wire and a couple of tools, and you could easily run it yourself. It's really mostly about fishing the wire through, which can be a bit of a pain, but the connections are straightforward. Just be careful and make sure to turn off the power first!
Since you already have a sensor, it might be fine to keep the thermostat in the basement as long as the app settings prioritize the upper sensor. But if you want to move it, either an HVAC tech or electrician will work; you could even look for a handyman who has experience with this kind of relocation!
I'd recommend calling in an HVAC pro since they deal with these installations regularly. They’ll know the ins and outs of what you need to do with the thermostat.
An electrician might be a better choice because they’re skilled at running new wiring through walls. However, it's a small job, so you could also consider a handyman—they're often cheaper and can handle this type of task just fine!
