What’s the Right Way to Handle Workers in Your Home?

I've been making a lot of improvements at my place recently, which means I've had quite a few workers and handymen coming and going. Since I'm working from home, I usually leave them to do their thing while I shut myself in my room to concentrate. I thought this was fine, but some friends mentioned it's rude to just leave them alone. To me, that feels a bit invasive—especially since I dislike being watched while I work. Is it different when it comes to builders? What do you think? By the way, I do offer them drinks or snacks before I retreat to my room, so I try to be polite!

You're definitely in the right mindset here! Your friends have a strange view. As the client, you should be able to decide whether to hang out or step away. A lot of workers actually prefer working without someone hovering over them—it can really disrupt their flow. It’s great to let them know you're available if they have questions, but giving them space is the best way to go.

Right? I always feel more comfortable when I can just focus without someone watching me!

Honestly, your friends are being silly! This isn’t a social gathering; it’s a job. Just let them do their work. I recommend popping in occasionally with a drink or snack and offering to help if something urgent comes up. The workers will appreciate the gesture, but they'll also appreciate the space to get their tasks done without feeling shadowed.

As a former tradesman myself, I can tell you: the best customers are those who give us the space we need. Show them the work area, share your concerns or requests, and then say, 'I’ll be down the hall if you need me.' Trust me, standing over them just adds pressure and can annoy them more than anything.

Thanks for sharing! I'll definitely take that advice to heart.
