Need Help Reviving My Sad Hedge: Any Tips?

Asked By GardenGnome87 On

I'm looking for some guidance on how to take care of my hedge. Despite my nan's best efforts to help me develop a green thumb, I'm still struggling! The hedges in our garden have been here forever, but they're looking pretty rough these days. There are dead patches and gaps, and they definitely aren't straight—just sad overall. My dad thinks we should cut them back hard to start fresh, but I'm really worried about a few things: 1) I'm scared they'll die completely, which means we'd have to remove them entirely. 2) I might prune them at the wrong time and cause more harm than good. 3) My nan may come back in spirit to haunt me for messing them up! Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide. You all have amazing gardening skills!

Make sure to check for any nesting birds! You don’t want to disturb them, as that's against the law and can lead to fines. Hedges are usually pruned in the offseason for this reason. And yeah, cutting too hard can be risky—some species won't return if you go too deep. Like, Cuprocyparis leylandii can struggle, while yew does better with pruning. Identifying your hedge species is key here!

Thanks for the heads up! I really appreciate the advice about the nests; I’ll make sure to look out for those before I do anything.

You really need to know what species of hedge you're dealing with. Some can handle a hard prune and bounce back nicely, while others might not survive it. If you can, try to identify the species first before making any decisions. A little research can save you a lot of trouble later!

Definitely agree with that! Also, if you can take some pictures, it might make it easier for others to help you figure out what you've got.
