I need some advice on replacing the head mechanism for my QuikLok string trimmer. I must admit, I didn't explain how to properly feed the line on a bump head to my kid, and now we're having issues. I found some cheaper knockoff heads for about $50, but I'm wondering if it might make more sense to invest in a whole new attachment, maybe even a used one. I thought the original loading mechanism was good, but I prefer winding my own heads since it usually leads to fewer problems. Has anyone managed to retrofit another head onto it easily?

Yeah, you can actually buy just the trimmer head separately. I found one on Ace Hardware for around $35, so it's not too bad. That said, if you're looking for something different, I totally get wanting to slap on an old-school head instead. I’ve heard the stock ones can be picky about the type of string you use, especially when it comes to the Milwaukee brand, which isn’t the best for the price.
In my opinion, the Echo Speed Feed 400 heads are the way to go! You can just buy the bump caps for much less than the full Milwaukee head. However, you might want to check if it fits the Milwaukee model because not all heads are standard.
I actually snagged the QuikLok powerhead and trimmer attachment used for $50 on Craigslist. The guy had broken the head and just couldn’t fix it. Turns out he lost a spring, but I had to swap the whole head to a Husqvarna T35, which I've heard good things about compared to the Milwaukee heads.
