Hey everyone! I started my gardening journey last year, and while I learned a lot about dealing with pests, weeds, and watering, I feel like I'm really struggling with my second garden this year. My tomato plants have spider mites again, and now I'm also battling stink bug damage. Keeping suckers trimmed for better air circulation is also a challenge because they seem to appear out of nowhere. I wanted to spray with copper fungicide but missed that opportunity, and my cucumber plants are facing their own issues and aren't doing well at all. The weeds and Bermuda grass have taken over my onions, making it hard to identify them. Plus, if I miss one day of picking, my okra turns into giant spears! My zucchini plants haven't produced anything this year. I'm juggling work and everything else, and the heat makes it even harder to stay on top of things. With the heat index above 90F, it's tough to find a good time to be out there. When I have bad days with my mental health, it really adds to the difficulty. How do you all manage your gardens? I appreciate any tips or encouragement you're willing to share!

I totally relate! I started gardening last year, too, and have been experimenting with different plants to see what thrives here in Florida. Some plants do great, while others just struggle. Don’t hesitate to plant some easier ones alongside those you really want to grow. And mulch is a game changer for weed control — it makes a huge difference! Just remember, at the end of the season, you can cover everything with compost and mulch, and the weeds will be a thing of the past.
Keeping up with everything can be a real struggle in the summer! I can't say I manage everything perfectly because the weeds are winning their battle in my garden. I've just accepted that I'm busy and I won’t always have the time to maintain everything the way I’d like. My peppers are thriving, though, and I'm trying new plants that can handle the heat better. I’m looking forward to fall planting when the weather cools down. It’s all about finding what works for you!
When I'm stressed about my garden, I think of how my mom tends hers. Despite being a master gardener, she often finds her plants in less-than-perfect shape, too! The key is to not let it overwhelm you. I’ve learned to take a more relaxed approach, allowing some natural balance. Try doing little tasks in the morning with your coffee instead of tackling everything at once. You'll feel more accomplished with smaller steps, and it’s much cooler out! Also, for those pesky spider mites, using something like Captain Jack's Super Soap can help when it’s cooler and pollinators are less active. Just take it easy and have fun with it!
It sounds like you're learning a lot this year, even if it's tough! For stink bugs, try to catch them early when they're still eggs or nymphs; otherwise, it's a losing battle. If your cucumbers aren't thriving, don't hesitate to pull them out – it’s better to focus on what's working. As for the okra, maybe just let them go to seed this time if you're overwhelmed. It might also help to water either in the morning or evenings when it’s cooler. Don't stress too much about the onions; just pick them when the tops turn yellow and flop over. Remember to prioritize what you enjoy and create a plan for next year that focuses on that. You got this!
Honestly, every gardener has tough years! Some seasons are great, some are just okay, and others can really test your patience. I'm in a similar hot and humid area, and it can be brutal. My motivation dips near mid-summer, too, but I keep reminding myself that my garden is more about the journey and less about the harvest. Just enjoy the experience, even when it's challenging! Don't be too hard on yourself; every year is a learning opportunity. Plus, maybe take breaks and keep it casual unless you really want to dive in. You’ll find the sweet spot!
