I've been reading a lot about potting plants, and I keep encountering the idea that putting rocks, pebbles, or gravel at the bottom of a pot is a no-go. People say it increases drainage, but actually, it seems to just raise the water table and risks root rot since the wet soil is closer to the roots. This makes me wonder about pot depth too—I've seen warnings about using pots that are too deep because the soil stays wet for too long, making it hard for roots to reach it. Would it make more sense to use rocks in that case to elevate the soil and help it dry out properly? I really want to avoid root rot!

I only use rocks at the bottom of my decorative pots to elevate the inner nursery pot. If a plant's roots can't reach the bottom, it's a sign you need a smaller pot. I haven't had drainage issues this way, plus excess water can just percolate down instead of sitting stagnant. That's the trick!
I feel you! I almost lost good plants due to drainage issues with rocks. Just keep experimenting with pot sizes instead of relying on rocks. That's where I've seen the best results!
I've lost a few plants because of a rock layer blocking drainage. I noticed the white landscaping rocks worked well for me, but overall, I would advise against using rocks. They just tend to complicate things, so sticking to the right size pot is key!
I totally get what you're saying! I use pebbles in the bottom of my decorative pots, but I always place a nursery pot filled with soil inside. It really helps because I tend to overwater, and the pebbles prevent the plants from rotting. It gives me peace of mind!
Honestly, it's best to just choose a smaller pot. If it's too deep, it might be too wide too. The consensus now is rocks don’t really help the drainage, and they can sometimes make things worse. I've read studies that suggest they might help, but I’m not a pro on fluid dynamics— I've always had better luck with the correct pot size.

Exactly! Using rocks just to elevate is a great idea without risking root rot. But if those roots aren't reaching, definitely rethink your pot situation.
