I'm working on a skull ring and want to char the wood band for effect. Would using a butane torch lighter be suitable for this task?

Using a butane lighter is definitely a good choice for something small like a ring. Just do a few test runs on some extra wood to ensure you get the char you want without going overboard.
Both butane and propane torches can get the job done! If you have a butane torch for pipes, that should work just fine. Just make sure to practice on a scrap piece first to perfect your technique before moving to the ring.

Thanks for the tips!
