Is Paying Cash for Sewer Replacement a Good Idea?

I just bought a house in Seattle and need a major sewer replacement for about $11,500 including tax and permits. However, the sewer company offered a cash price of $10,000 but won't provide a receipt, just a detailed report of the work done. Since part of the sewer work involves my neighbor's yard, I'm concerned about potential complications. Has anyone had experience with this type of deal? I'd love to get some pros and cons to help me decide!

You should really think about whether they handle all necessary permits. If something goes wrong in your neighbor's yard, it could lead to insurance issues. For a job like this, it’s crucial to have all bases covered.

Definitely ensure you get some form of documentation on the work they'll do. If they don't give you a receipt, it raises red flags about what's really going on. You don't want to be stuck with a half-completed job because no one can prove you paid.

I'd advise against taking the cash deal if they won't give you a receipt. If anything goes wrong, you might find yourself paying again for repairs without proof that you even hired them. No paper trail is risky.
