I just received a quote of $1500 to tile around my fireplace, which is about 30 square feet. This price is just for labor, as we'll be purchasing the materials ourselves. The area is already prepped; my husband has put up cement board and leveled everything out. I'm wondering if this quote is reasonable or if the contractor is trying to take advantage of us. I'm in the process of getting other quotes, but I'm curious if this is the going rate for this kind of work.

If you and your husband managed to get the backer board up and it's leveled, why not consider tiling it yourselves? It could save you a lot of money, and tiling isn't too difficult with some guidance from YouTube.
Labor for tiling can be pricey because it’s hard work, but without seeing the specific tile and the setup, it's tough to say if $1500 is a fair price. Black hexagon tiles can look great, but intricate cuts and finishing details will drive up the labor costs. What are the other quotes you’re getting like?
That quote does seem high, especially if your husband has already done most of the prep work. Typically, for such small jobs, contractors have a minimum they need to charge to make it worthwhile. Have you compared it to the other quotes yet?

I’m still waiting on a couple more quotes, but this one seems much higher than what I expected!
