Thinking About Carving Like My Grandpa, Should I Go for It?

Hey everyone, I'm looking for some advice. My grandfather passed away shortly after Christmas in 2023, and he was an incredible woodcarver. Whenever I visited him, I was always amazed by his beautiful bird carvings. I've been passionate about art and creative endeavors all my life, but I never got the chance to learn carving from him since we lived so far apart. Now, I really want to give it a try myself and was thinking about asking my grandma if she still has any of his tools, including the sharpening stone he used. I just feel stuck in my dead-end job and I've been battling depression lately, so this seems like a great way to honor his memory and dive into a new hobby. I'm unsure of where to start, what kind of wood to use, or what tools I might need without hurting myself. Should I take the plunge and try carving?

Absolutely go for it! Carving can be such a beautiful and fulfilling hobby, especially when it connects you to your grandfather's memory. It's a great way to channel your creativity and maybe even heal a bit. Just remember to enjoy the process and have fun with it!

Definitely give it a shot! Carving can be very therapeutic. Start with some good tools but make sure you have the right setup like a carving vise. I suggest getting basswood; it's perfect for beginners. If you can get your grandpa’s tools, that would make it even more special!

Also, be careful with your cuts! A good knife can really improve your experience.

Go for it! Carving is such a calming activity. Just get a decent carving knife and maybe some anti-cut gloves to keep it safe. Look for beginner tutorials online; they can really help get you started without any frustration!

Learning to carve is amazing! I started carving a couple of decades ago, and it became a big part of my life. Take your time; you'll improve with practice. There are tons of great books out there, so grab one and start experimenting!

You've got nothing to lose! Jump in, but remember to approach it as a fun exploration rather than something you need to master right away. It can be very rewarding, especially when you start creating something tangible.
