Why Do People Prefer Hand Tools Over Power Tools?

I'm transitioning from relying on machines to using hand tools for my woodworking projects. After graduating and moving into my basement, I've discovered my limited funds mean fewer power tools. I'm excited about this journey, as I have a deep appreciation for hand-made work. However, I struggle with the idea of cutting hardwood by hand when a table or bandsaw would make it so much easier. I'm curious about why others prefer hand tools over power tools. Is it due to budget constraints, studio limitations, a love for traditional craftsmanship, safety concerns, or something else? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

I'm all about the hand tools for their satisfying precision. There's nothing like the clean finish you get from using a hand plane. Plus, there’s less risk of serious injury compared to power tools. I enjoy the slower, more deliberate pace—it feels like a meditation rather than just building something. But I still have to admit that I rely on my bandsaw for long cuts! It’s a great balance between using machines and enjoying the hands-on work.

Many people choose hand tools for the control they offer. They tend to be quieter and can produce a better finish without creating a ton of dust. Plus, mistakes with hand tools are usually easier to correct. I've found that using hand tools helps me connect more intimately with my projects. They've even inspired me to learn how to maintain and fine-tune my tools better. If you’re not doing batch work, hand tools can be just as efficient as power tools for one-off projects.

Honestly, I prefer hand tools because they don't make a lot of noise, which is perfect for my late-night projects. I renovated my sister's kitchen using hand tools and could work without worry of disturbing anyone. They do take up less space too, which is great since my workshop is pretty cramped. And there's something peaceful about working with hand tools that allows me to focus more on what I'm doing.
