Can I Safely Remove an Old Landline Jack by Cutting It Off?

Hey everyone, I'm renovating my place and planning to repaint my walls. Those old phone jacks are such an eyesore! Is it okay if I just cut the wires, tuck them in the wall, and cover the hole with a patch? I haven't used a landline in years and don't plan to in the future. Additionally, will this affect the home's value or cause issues during inspections if I sell it later on? Thanks in advance!

Yep, that’s pretty much how it’s done! As long as you just hide the wire in the wall, you won’t run into any code violations or hazards. Just make sure it’s tucked away securely.

Cutting and patching the jack is fine! Just disconnect the wire before you cut it, and make sure to tape the ends to prevent any shorts. A little extra labeling for yourself wouldn't hurt either. I did it to my own house, and there were no issues when it came time to sell.

Honestly, as long as you patch it up nicely, most inspectors won’t even notice. I did a similar thing, and it all went smoothly!

I’d suggest against just patching it over completely. It might be wiser to use a blank plate that you can paint to match the wall. That way, it looks neat but still gives you the option to change it back if needed.
