Tips for Cutting Perfect Circular Holes in MDF

Hey everyone! I'm working on a woodworking project to make a cubby for my wife and I have quite a bit of experience as a carpenter over the last decade. I plan to use 3/4" MDF for this project, and she wants circular holes in it. I've cut circles in MDF with a jigsaw before, but I'm thinking about using a router with a circle jig for more precision. Has anyone tried this method? How did it work out for you in terms of getting consistent results? Thanks a lot!

I haven’t used MDF specifically, but I’ve made circles in walnut and cherry using the same method. I can tell you, the principle is pretty much the same; just be prepared for a lot of dust with MDF! A spiral bit on a trim router works really well if you have one.

Using a circle jig with a router is a fantastic idea for cutting circles in MDF! Just make sure to practice on some scrap pieces first to get the feel for it. It really helps with consistency and you avoid any surprises on the actual project!

Thanks for the tip! I was just curious about how the MDF holds up to the router bit—like if it tears or not.
