I recently bought an unfinished bookshelf made of parawood (also known as rubberwood), and I'm really not handy at all. I tend to mess up projects easily, so I'm looking for the simplest way to stain it. I want to avoid a finish that feels sticky or tacky, as I've had issues with my books getting stuck to shelves in the past. Given my lack of experience, what would you recommend as the easiest application process for staining this bookshelf?

I find that wiping on stains can actually be pretty straightforward! Just do a few test spots first to see if you like how it looks. It's the clear coats that usually give me trouble. Also, remember that the feel you're worried about (stickiness and texture) often comes from whatever finish you apply on top of the stain, not the stain itself.
Honestly, I’d skip staining altogether. The process can be tricky with a brush and requires a lot of attention. Instead, go for a wipe-on water-based polyurethane. It’s super easy and won't give you any sticky issues. Plus, you won't have to worry about burning your house down!
You might want to consider using drying oils like tung or boiled linseed oil. They dry faster and give a nice look without being too tricky to apply. Just keep in mind that these will require some care when disposing of rags, but overall, they're pretty foolproof.
