Can I Put Matte Finish Over a Glossy Finish on My Kitchen Table?

I've got a circular walnut kitchen table that's about 4 feet in diameter and was finished with a glossy polyurethane a couple of years ago. My girlfriend would prefer it to be less shiny. I'm wondering if I can quickly sand the glossy finish and then apply a couple of layers of matte polyurethane to achieve that look. Would that work, or do I need to strip the glossy finish entirely, which I'd really like to avoid? Thanks for your help!

Absolutely, you can definitely apply a matte finish over a glossy one! Just make sure to lightly scuff up the glossy surface first so the new finish sticks properly. From my experience, a couple of coats of matte should do the trick, just sand lightly between each coat for the best results.

For sure! Just a quick scuffing with some sandpaper should be enough. Then, apply your matte finish; you might want to do a couple of layers with some light sanding in between to avoid any haziness.

Yes, you can go matte over glossy without removing the whole finish. Just give the glossy layer a light sanding to create some texture for the new finish to adhere to. After that, you can apply your matte polyurethane—just remember to do a few coats for a nice, even look.
