Is Replacing Brick on a Chimney an Easy DIY Job?

Last night we got over two inches of rain, and now our roof is leaking. I think the issue may be with the chimney stack since the bricks have been in bad shape for a while and were poorly patched previously. I'm wondering if anyone here has experience with this kind of work or if it's something I could tackle myself. I do work in construction, but I haven't done any masonry before.

Replacing chimney bricks can be a bit tedious but doable. Since you have a construction background, you might pick up masonry techniques quickly. Just make sure to get the right materials and tools. YouTube has some fantastic tutorials, too! Just keep in mind that if the stack is really deteriorated, you might need a pro to take a look.

You might want to check the flashing around the chimney first. Sometimes that's the main culprit when water leaks happen, rather than the bricks themselves. If that's not the issue, it could be leaking where the chimney meets the roof. Just something to consider before diving into replacing bricks!

Yeah, that's a good point! It’s definitely worth inspecting that first. I had a similar issue with my roof a while back.

Thanks for the heads-up! I’ll inspect the flashing and see what’s going on.
