I'm planning to install a paver patio in my backyard (17'x20') and eventually want to add a covered gazebo to enjoy the space in rain or winter. I'm unsure whether to attach the gazebo to my house or build it free-standing. Here are my questions:
1. Is it better to have a free-standing gazebo, or should I attach it to the house using just posts on the far side with patio roof risers?
2. How many support posts do I need? Would four posts along the 20ft side work if I also attach it to the house, or would I need four extra posts if it's completely free-standing?
Keep in mind that we get a lot of snow here, so the structure needs to support that added weight and have some slope. Also, the soffits of the house are only about 12 ft off the ground.

Here's a visual that might help you out with your plans! Check it out here: [Patio Roof Visual](https://imgur.com/gallery/patio-roof-KSTaybZ)
Honestly, it’s best to consult a professional for designing the patio roof. You really don't want to skimp on this part. Trying to support it with standoffs from your roof can lead to a lot of issues down the line. It’s worth investing in a qualified architect or at least work through some local building codes and wood span tables.
Going with a free-standing gazebo is usually the easiest and most cost-effective route. If you attach it to the house, you’d be looking at more complicated design work and costs. Free-standing lets you avoid touching the house at all. For your posts, I’d recommend setting footers for them at least every 10 feet, and using 8x8s would work well for the structure.

Thanks for the advice! That's a good point.
