How Can I Keep Mice Out of My Kitchen?

Hey everyone! I recently got my house back from my ex, and it was in really bad shape with a serious rodent problem. After cleaning out tons of garbage and sanitizing the place, I thought I had taken care of the issue. I used traps, poison (safe for pets), and filled any holes with steel wool and spray foam. I also kept the food locked away and maintained a clean environment. However, I let my guard down for a bit, and now I've found some mouse droppings and even a chewed-up packet of Graham cracker crumbs.

I'm looking for your advice—can mice reach higher shelves in my open pantry? Should I hang my fruit and veggie basket to keep them off the surface? Is my sink area clean enough at night, and are there any other tips you might have? (I've got some bait stations and traps set up today.) Reassuringly, I haven't seen evidence of mice in the drawers where I keep tea and spices, but I'm a bit worried about that new open pantry setup. I also manage my pets' kibble very carefully, ensuring no leftover food is out overnight. Would love to hear your thoughts!

One method I've heard of is using metal sheets along the wall and floor seams to stop them in their tracks. It sounds like a big task but can be super effective!

Are you talking about something like aluminum foil, or is it something sturdier?

Honestly, hiring exterminators could save you a lot of hassle. They know how to find the hidden holes where mice get in. Just be cautious—they might suggest heavy poison, but focus on prevention. DIY sealing with wire mesh can work wonders. Also, washing the space with mint scent can deter them!

That's exactly what I experienced too! The pros only wanted to push poison. I’ve taken a lot of steps to block entry points myself and now I’m just worried about my food!

Mice love to nest in insulation or hidden spaces, so even with a clean kitchen, they might be lurking in walls or crawl spaces. It's smart to keep the place tidy, but ensure you check those less obvious areas too!

That's true! They usually stay where they can find food, so just focusing on cleanliness might not be enough. I'm really keen on just avoiding them ruining my snacks!
