How can I cool down my hot basement this summer?

With summer in full swing, my basement is feeling like a sauna, and my kids are really uncomfortable down there. I'm searching for ways to cool it off without jumping straight to a mini-split system or fully ducting the space, though those options are on the table if nothing else works. I suspect that the large number of LED can lights might be contributing to the heat—about 50-60 of them across a 1500 sq ft basement. The previous owner went a bit overboard with the lighting, which is great, but my kids turn on all the lights since they're scared of the dark. On a recent trip, I noticed that while the main floor was set to a cozy 80°F, the basement dropped to 72°F almost immediately when the lights were off. Now it creeps back to 76°F after just some activity. My basement has modern insulation and windows, it's about 7-8 feet underground, and it's lacking some airflow since the main floor is the only part with ductwork. I'm planning to re-caulk the windows, but I'm seeking other effective cooling strategies. Any thoughts?

Have you considered installing a mini-split? They work wonders for cooling spaces like basements. But if you're looking for cheaper alternatives first, maybe try reducing the number of LED bulbs you're using? Those things can really kick off the heat. You could even get a little creative and unscrew half of the bulbs just to bring the heat down until you figure out a more permanent fix.

Yeah, it feels weird to have such a nice finished space without any ducting! If you do decide to go for it later, pricing out options could help you budget for it better.
