Is It Possible and Worth It to Raise the Ceilings in a Brick House?

I have a family member with a ~3300 square foot brick house built around 1995, and I'm curious about the feasibility and cost of raising the ceilings. Ideally, we're looking at increasing the height of the first-floor ceilings by about 1-2 feet, although if it turns out easier, raising both levels could be an option. What should we expect in terms of cost and complexity for this kind of renovation?

You're probably looking at well over $70k for this kind of project. You’ll have to clear out the house, deal with plumbing and electrical rewiring, and then put everything back together. Honestly, people often suggest just building something new because it turns out to be less hassle.

Raising the ceilings is likely going to be more expensive than just building a new house. It's a huge project involving structural work and can get very complicated.

Yeah, I'm inclined to think a new build might be the more practical route.

From what I've seen, costs can range dramatically. I found some info saying an average of $50k, but it can go as low as $15k or high as $125k depending on various factors. However, remember this is a big job with lots of permits and planning to navigate.

Instead of raising the ceilings, you might want to consider exposing and finishing the joists. This could give you that open feel without the massive costs and headaches of a full raise.

That sounds like a solid plan! Much more manageable.
