I'm trying to figure out how to install a dog door in my wall since my dog's current door isn't big enough. The wall depth is around 12 inches, and there's an old dog door that's been covered up from the outside but still has a flap inside. I need a door that's suitable for an extra-large dog, which requires a cutout of about 15.5 inches wide and 26 inches high. I'm considering hiring someone to do this, but I'm wary of getting it done right. The second option I have is a walkout basement with a 36-inch door in between two glass doors. A handyman told me it would be risky to replace the middle door since the others might need replacement too, and the height isn't standard by about half an inch. Does that sound accurate, or could a skilled carpenter make it work? I'd really prefer the second option if possible!

It would be helpful to see pictures of your door setup. You can use a site like Imgur to upload and share the link. For the previous dog door, you’ll need to construct some walls inside the tunnel. Make sure to use water-resistant plywood on the outside that you can paint to match your house. I’ve seen dog doors that utilize a soft plastic flap outside to keep water out while the inside door can be more secure. Also, consider flaps that only allow your dog to come through to avoid unexpected visitors like cats or raccoons. Some options even have magnetic switches that work with a collar tab!
Check out the Dog Mate dog doors; they offer extension liners specifically designed for thicker walls like yours. It should be a straightforward install, really!
I haven't found those in my searches before! Thanks for the heads up!

I appreciate that info! Definitely will keep it in mind.
