Why Is My Ceiling Creaking When the A/C Turns On?

I've been noticing a creaking sound coming from my ceiling whenever the A/C cycles on and off. It seems like it's the drywall or something else expanding and contracting. The noise is particularly annoying because it's right above my TV in the living room. There's no ductwork in that area, just the floor above, although there's a return duct located behind the TV. This creaking happens at specific times, especially during those evenings when the temperature is in the mid-70s and the A/C works the hardest. I suspect this occurs more often because the room above gets quite warm in summer, which might exacerbate the cold air cycling on and off. I'm considering marking where I hear the sound and maybe driving some drywall screws into the ceiling to catch a joist. Any thoughts on what's causing this noise?

It sounds like the unit might be sitting on a type of base, like plywood or a drain pan. That's a good place to start checking. But honestly, it could be some issues with the ductwork too. You'll probably need to get up into the ceiling or attic to investigate further.

I see what you mean, but just a heads up, the unit's actually in the basement, and the noise is coming from the first floor. Should I still check up there?
