Need Help Sharpening a Card Scraper for Working with Padouk

I'm working on a project to create a Coffin plane using Padouk as a gift, but I've run into some challenges. Although Padouk is known for being easy to work with, I've noticed it tends to tear out. I've attempted to sharpen a card scraper before for minor applications, but I've struggled to get a proper burr on it. Does anyone have a good video tutorial for sharpening a card scraper? I've seen Paul Sellers' video but never got a satisfactory burr going on my old card scraper. I have a burnisher and files, but my last sharpening attempt was quite discouraging. Also, what should I expect in terms of shavings with a properly sharpened card scraper? I noticed in Paul Sellers' video he makes thin, wispy shavings before switching to a guide and producing shorter, dust-like curls, which is quite different from what I experienced—my last attempt yielded mostly dust! Any guidance would be appreciated!

A tip I learned is to sharpen all four edges of the card scraper but slightly differently. Change the angle, pressure, and strokes a bit for each edge. You’re likely to find one that works well. Once you figure out the right pressure and angles, it becomes way more consistent! I typically use my vise to hold the scraper with just a bit above the vise for better control.

That’s a great idea! I hadn’t thought about varying the angles; I’ll give that method a shot.

Check out this video from Lost Art Press; it helped me a lot with getting a great burr. I’ve been using their technique and it really clarified the process for me! Here’s the link: https://youtu.be/LsGlNSi4Syw?si=Co-nThKYoz85Aywe
