How to Fix Worn-Out Keypad Numbers on My Smart Lock?

Asked By WanderingNinja21 On

I've set up smart locks from Yale on my properties for guests to use door codes, but I've noticed that the keypad numbers are wearing out after about six months of use. I'm considering a couple of options to fix this: one is to spray paint the keypad and redraw the numbers myself, but I'm having trouble finding a suitable toolkit online. The other option is to replace the keypad entirely, but I can't find the original replacement parts anywhere. Does anyone have suggestions for where I can buy supplies for these repairs or any other solutions?

You might want to check if Yale can repair the lock under warranty since it’s only six months old. Sometimes they cover this kind of wear if you're just using it as a regular door lock, though you might run into issues if they consider it too much usage since you’re using them for a rental property.

A good preventive measure is to apply a coat of clear fingernail polish over the numbers when the keypads are new. It helps protect the digits from wearing out quickly.

Instead of fingernail polish, you could try using a clear adhesive window film or drawer liner to cover the keypad. I’ve even heard about using that clear protectant they put over car hoods since it’s UV-resistant, which would be great for outdoor use.
