I found a Stanley 45 combination plane at an antique mall today for $35, and I'm wondering if that was a good deal or if I got taken for a ride. It's a bit rusty, so I'm planning to take it apart, soak it in evaporust, and clean it up. Does anyone have tips on how to properly set this thing up once it's cleaned? Also, can I buy replacement blades for it, or do they need to be original Stanley blades? Thanks in advance, woodworkers!

Honestly, that price is decent for a crusty plane. Just be prepared to spend a bit more if you want to find all the parts and additional cutters. Sometimes it can end up costing more than getting a complete one in better shape. Still, it's a fun project if you're up for it!
You did pretty well at $35! That's a steal for a No. 45. When you soak it in evaporust, try to hang it with the handle sticking out for easier access. You'll find that blades from other brands will fit, though you might need to make minor adjustments. Good luck!
$35 for a rusty one is about right, especially if it didn't come with blades. It's common for sellers to keep the blades separately. Just so you know, the blades can get pretty pricey, so keep an eye on that if you plan to restore it completely.
