Which Saw Should I Buy for Basic Homeowner Projects?

I'm not really into DIY, but I need a reliable saw for some simple homeowner tasks. I want to cut scrap plywood, make a cat hole in a door, and possibly build a few shelves. I've been considering a jigsaw as a versatile option, but I'm overwhelmed by the variety and lack of reviews. Since I already have Craftsman tools, I'd prefer to stick with that brand for battery compatibility. What type of saw should I choose, and are there specific features I should look for? Thanks in advance!

If you're looking for just one saw and you're not diving into serious woodworking, a jigsaw is a solid choice for general tasks. I recommend going for a Bosch corded model, as they really perform well. I've got a variety of saws, from a table saw to a jigsaw, and each has its own purpose. But for your needs, a jigsaw would be your best bet!

Don't overlook getting used tools from places like Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. Almost all of my tools, including Craftsman products, were bought used, and they work perfectly fine. My total spend was under $200 when I started out as a homeowner!

I'd recommend getting both a circular saw and a jigsaw. A circular saw won't help you with your cat hole, but it’s perfect for larger cuts. Meanwhile, jigsaw cuts for shelves can look rough, so having both tools gives you more versatility. Good quality tools last a long time!

I totally agree! Having both really helps. Also, maybe check if you can get a combo kit? It might save you some cash.

A wireless jigsaw is a great choice too! Black and Decker has a good, affordable option for light projects. It’s simple to use and won't break the bank.

Opt for a barrel grip jigsaw! Trust me, once you switch from a regular top handle to a barrel grip, you won’t want to go back. It’s really comfortable to use and feels more natural for precision cuts.
